How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on 4Reviews starts with one question: will this product work for the person and workspace it is meant for? For a chair, that means your size, how you work, how long you sit and the space around your desk.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the person and the setup

A chair that suits a tall person may not fit someone shorter. A wide chair may not work under a compact desk, and a chair for occasional use may not suit a long workday.

We check seat height and depth, width, weight capacity, adjustment range, desk clearance and the space needed to move. For accessories and other workspace products, we consider the matching details, like floor type, screen height, desk size and available room.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the maker's listed measurements, materials, controls, support features, included parts and warranty terms. For chairs, that can include armrests, lumbar support, recline, casters and upholstery; for desks and accessories, we check fit, setup and compatibility.

Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. When a detail is missing or unclear, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like uncomfortable seats, parts that loosen, difficult assembly, noisy mechanisms or accessories that do not fit as expected.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A chair that suits long desk sessions may score lower in a guide for compact spaces or a specific body size.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Chair and workspace guides are not medical advice. If pain or a health condition affects your seating needs, ask a qualified health professional for guidance.
